7 Benefits of Body Worn Cameras for Security Guards

When the body worn camera was first introduced to the security industry, it was greeted with scepticism. These days though, this equipment is issued to security guards as standard, and multi-national security firms invest heavily to provide it to their staff. Body worn cameras for security guards reduce dangerous incidents and offer the following advantages:

1) They Keep Security Guards and The General Public Safer

Body worn cameras for security guards capture live video footage throughout the day or evening – and this footage can be used as evidence. This prevents many confrontational situations from turning violent because people realise their behaviour is being monitored. Nobody can get away with assaulting someone then denying it if it is caught on camera.

2) Some Allow Security Guard Managers To Monitor Events In Real Time

Many of the body worn cameras in DTS’s range, including the HALO S3 Horizon, offer live streaming capabilities. This means that footage recorded by body worn cameras can be viewed online by security supervisors and security managers, allowing them to observe events as they happen. This way, they can help guards handle situations better, or provide additional support if needed. Compared to a verbal description, this footage is more useful.

2) Some Allow Security Guard Managers To Monitor Events In Real Time

Not all body worn cameras offer live streaming. However, for those that do, this means that live footage recorded by body worn cameras can be viewed online by security guard managers, so they can observe events as they happen. This way, they can help guards handle situations better, or provide additional support if needed. Compared to a verbal description, this footage is more useful.

3) They Facilitate Staff Performance Analysis

They’re great tool for assessing staff performance. These cameras record the courageous actions of guards, so their supervisors can reward them accordingly. The footage can also be used to train new security guards as well, to prepare them for similar situations.

4) They Offer Protection From False Allegations

A body worn camera provides audio and visual evidence of an incident’s sequence of events. This is important because many security guards get wrongly accused of misconduct these days. Often, this occurs when they are carrying out their duties correctly, but they are obliged to refuse some people  entry to venues for legitimate reasons.

In other cases, guards might be perceived as causing annoyance by challenging someone’s inappropriate behaviour. It is fairly common, in these situations, for people to enact revenge on security guards by filing misconduct cases against them. Body camera footage counters these false accusations and serves as an impartial witness. This settles disputes quickly and allows security guards to avoid legal action that they would have to deal with otherwise.

5) Can Also Be Used As a Push-To-Talk Service (Over Cellular/Wi-Fi)

The Hytera VM780 and Hytera VM58OD  from DTS also have the ability to act as a push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) two-way radio.  This gives security guards the opportunity to communicate clearly and effectively with one another over huge distances, just by simply pressing the push-to-talk button.

What’s more, both body worn camera have a dedicated emergency button, allowing security personnel to quickly and discreetly request the help of their colleagues. Both PTT and emergency button functionality is achieved via Hytera’s HyTalk app.

6) They Are Lightweight and Have Multi-Mounting Options

As body worn cameras are often made from lightweight materials, this will definitely not restrict whoever is wearing the camera, from the duties that they need to carry out. Your guards can still move around freely and get the job done. Similarly, body worn cameras can be easily attached to different security guard uniforms with differing harnesses, making them very easily portable.
